Boteti district community has been urged to take care and ensure sustainability of the Khwee small stock and fodder production and solar energy project.

Speaking at the project official handover ceremony on Monday, Lucara Botswana general manager, Mr Johane Mchive said such projects were monitored, hence had the potential to flourish and be sustainable for a long time.

Mr Mchive also noted that the Khwee small stock and fodder production project could be an example to other upcoming projects and be used for benchmarking purposes.

Financed under the Karowe Village Initiatives, the project is operated by the Khwee multipurpose co-operative society.

The project, Mr Mchive said would contribute towards improving the quality of small stock breeds in the area through the sale of high-quality bucks thereby making small stock more commercialised.

This project will also ensure the availability of feeds to farmers in the area through sale of excess fodder. As for the Khwee solar energy project, the GM said would enhance the quality of living through provision of electricity to the village, powering the community centre, the Kgotla as well as the VDC houses.

He said solar energy was also cost effective and played an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change.

Boteti district council chairperson, Mr Molemi Galeragwe commended Lucara for the gesture, adding that it was a gift that people of Boteti should embrace.

Mr Galeragwe therefore implored stakeholders such as the social and community development office and veterinary among others to make regular visits to project for effective monitoring.

He however acknowledged challenges facing the project, such as regular bowsing of water something he said was costly.

Kgosi Meshack Tseleng of Khwee also said the Khwee small stock and fodder production and solar energy project was a welcome development which would see lives of people in the area change for the better. ENDS
