Maun ready for Easter horse race

22 Mar 2023

Maun Easter Holidays’ horse race will be staged at Shashe Horse Track April  8.

Chief organiser, Charlie Mabua, said in an interview that preparations were at an advanced stage with registration of horses duly completed, while clearing of the track would commence soon.

Mabua cleared the mist following reports that the race would be relocated to a new venue at Samedupi, 13 kilometres away from Maun.

He noted that the issue had been discussed and resolved, further revealing that they had secured new sponsors.

Mabua appealed to the community to attend ‘the most admired horse race’ in droves and have fun.

He said they had registered over 100 horses from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa to participate in different races.

Meanwhile, in an effort to enhance preparations and training for the big event, Maun horse owners recently held a mini-horse racing competition at Shashe horse racing track to select best performing horses to participate in the upcoming event.

The event attracted 10 Tswana breed horses from Maun.

Maun horse owners chairperson, Gopolang Gabonatsela, said the village’s horses had not been performing optimally in the Easter Holidays spectacular due to lack of sponsors.

He said they saw it fit to organise the recent event as part of their training and thanked SKL Safari company managing director, Reaboka Mbulawa for aiding them financially.

Gabonatsela was hopeful that Maun horses would outclass competitors.

“After this competition, we are going to meet and select quality horses to participate in different categories during the big event,” he added.

Masale Maoto, whose horses won in the heats and final race, appreciated the competition, saying it helped them to check their horses’ fitness and strength.

He said horses needed intensive training to be in excellent physical condition and be able to run fast.

Maoto invited the business community to sponsor horse racing challenges in Maun to grow the sport. ENDS
