Maun police investigate crocodile attack

Maun police station commander, Superintendent Chenamo Orateng has urged parents and guardians to keep an eye on children, following a horrific crocodile attack at Koromo settlement, a few kilometres from Maun.

The incident involved a 13-year-old boy, who was attacked and killed by a crocodile while swimming in Thamalakane River with two friends recently.

Superintendent Orateng said they received a report on Thursday afternoon and a rescue team was dispatched to the scene where they started the search operation. Their efforts did not yield results.

The team, he said continued with the search the following day and managed to retrieve the body from the water. It was reported that the boy’s death comes shortly after writing his Standard 7 final examinations last month.

The police chief urged parents to always monitor their children’s movements to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

As heavy rains continue, he warned members of the community not to leave children unattended near water sources to avoid drowning incidents.

Superintendent Orateng noted that water sources were home to dangerous animals such hippos and crocodiles and encouraged parents to ensure children’s safety at all times.

In addition, he called on parents to constantly talk to their children and make them aware of the possible dangers around rivers and other water sources.

Meanwhile, in Gumare police are investigating the death of a middle aged man who was struck by lightning while walking from Etsha 6 to Etsha 4, with a friend over the weekend.

Officer Commanding Senior Superintendent Victor Nlebesi confirmed the incident, noting that the deceased and his friend were both struck by lightning, but the friend recovered consciousness after some time.

Senior Superintendent Nlebesi said the friend tried to wake the deceased up, but he did not respond. He then rushed him to Etsha 6 local clinic, where he was certified dead. BOPA
