Police win basketball league

10 Nov 2013

Police V women wrapped up the Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) league title with two games to spare after defeating second-placed BDF V 74-59 on November 9.

The win at the SSKB courts in Mogoditshane enabled Police to open an unassailable lead at the top of the women’s standings with 35 points, six ahead of BDF V who still had four matches to play. They also gained revenge on their bitter rivals after BDF spoiled Police’s unbeaten run by beating the champions 56-45 two weeks ago.

Police head coach, James Kalebwe said it was good feeling to win the league two seasons in a row. “It was sweet revenge today especially that this victory has sealed the title for us. Our energy levels and champions mentality carried us through because our play was a little bit below par today,” said the youthful coach.

He said he decided to use a different approach to avoid another loss after their 16-match winning streak was halted by BDF two weeks ago. “I decided to increase the pace at which we attacked our opponents today and the plan worked. I felt we needed to pick our tempo because we were slow in our previous game, and our pace proved to be the difference today.”

Police clicked from the onset with captain Endie Banyaditse, Kelebogile Thwabi, Kemmonye Madikwe and Sesupo Balosi proving strong in attack as they established a 33-29 lead at halftime. However, for all their attacking brilliance, they were repeatedly caught at the back by their equally potent opponents. BDF on the other hand fluffed numerous opportunities through poor shooting at the basket.

BDF reliable players, Resego Moepeng, Orapeleng Leagajang and Katlego Mogae were having a bad day and Police capitalised in the last two quarters with Balosi and Banyaditse at the forefront of their attacks. Ends
