Taung Village Development Committee (VDC) has handed over the newly opened cemetery built at a cost of P300 000 to the South East South Sub-district Council.
Speaking at the new burial site at Ramotswa Station, Kgosi Reuben Masie of Taung applauded Taung (VDC) for achieving their goal of establishing a new burial site as the old one was almost full.
“Regular access to burial grounds is crucial to all of us, as such it is vital to issue easy accessibility of burial sites in our communities because they are considered as places of serene remembrance,” said Kgosi Masie.
He said even though the burial ground was handed over to the sub-council,, it was the community’s responsibility to keep it safe and clean, further advising the council to work with the community.
Kgosi Masie said to avoid wasting land in the new garden of remembrance; the council must dig graves close to each other without leaving too big spaces in between.
The deputy chairperson of Taung VDC, Mr Oageng Masie said in the past the committee had difficulties in controlling the old cemetery and most of the time the council helped them, that was why the council would now be in charge of the new burial ground.
Mr Masie said with the support of the village leaders, the VDC was able to fence the whole ground, built toilets and a store room. BOPA
