Thamalakane dries through evapotranspiration

06 Nov 2013

Water in the Thamalakane River dries up through evapotranspiration, seepage into the ground and abstraction of water from the river and boreholes close to the river for village water supply.

This was said by defence, justice and security minister, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse, when responding to a question in Parliament on behalf of minerals, energy and water resources minister. Mr Seretse said the amount of water in the Thamalakane River was primarily dependent on the amount of water that reached Mohembo from the highlands of Angola.

“During years of high flows more water reaches the Thamalakane River and it can flow all year round. However, during years of low flows less water reaches the Thamalakane, and it can dry up for part of the season,” he added.

Selebi Phikwe West MP, Mr Gilson Saleshando had wanted to know whether the Thamalakane River dried up through evaporation or the water went underground. ENDS
