Fulfil SAMIM pledges - Magosi
17 Aug 2022
The SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) requires a great deal of financing to successfully execute its mandate, Mr Elias Magosi said in Kinshasa Tuesday.
Addressing a SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation troika meeting, the bloc’s executive secretary therefore appealed to member state to fulfil pledges made towards SAMIM either through personnel provision or monetarily.
Noting that the pledges were made in August last year, he stressed that they must be fulfilled because the mission still required a lot of support.
Mr Magosi said sustainable peace and security in the entire region was pivotal to social livelihoods enhancement.
“This is only attainable if all parties are committed in ensuring that the organ roots out the insurgency in Mozambique, which has the potential to spread across the region if not promptly and utterly attended to,” he said.
Mr Magosi said apart from the situation in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province, there were new disturbing developments in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He stressed that the situation called for regional intervention before it escalated with more devastating effects.
The executive secretary said it was paramount for the region to pay closer attention to the situation and ensure that the country’s borders were free.
On another issue, Mr Magosi reminded the troika that Angola and Lesotho would soon be going to the polls and wished both countries successful and peaceful elections.
“We are hopeful that both elections will be held within the values that define the SADC community,” he said. Ends
