Selebi Phikwe Town Council mayor, Mr Lucas Modimana has commended Selebi Phikwe Police Station for scooping the Best Station Award during the No.10 District Cluster Awards.

The award was presented to the police station with more clusters which had attained position one to three in both community commitment and best practice categories.

Mr Modimana also thanked No.10 District executive committee members for showing commitment and perseverance to fulfil their duties despite the COVID-19 pandemic. He said it was through the executive committee that the community clusters were inspired to come up with distinguished ways of curbing crimes, to meet evaluation criterion.

He also thanked the cluster policing members for selflessly working hard to achieve the accolades and encouraged those who did not perform well to be inspired by the achievements of their counterparts.

Mr Modimana further explained that the practice of policing in partnership with the community was not a new phenomenon but rather a globally recognised and effective policing strategy by far.

“Our cluster communities will be highly motivated to work tirelessly in team setups to accumulate more trophies and awards in future commemorations,” he said.

He commended Botswana Police Service for introducing the Safer City Initiative in Gaborone and Francistown cities and pleaded with the police commissioner to consider extending it to Selebi Phikwe as it would go a long way in thwarting criminal activities such as robberies and armored vehicles heists which were becoming common.

No.10 District executive chairperson, Mr Noah Makaba stated that community policing forum started in 2008 with the aim to engage the community and dikgosi in the fight against all forms of crime.

He said the forum therefore, was owned by both the community and the police, with emphasis on the importance of cluster policing with regard to crime prevention.

Mr Makaba who also scooped the District Chairperson Award for serving 10 years in the committee, said the police coordinated the crime prevention cluster committees whilst members of the community came up with initiatives to curb crime in their respective communities.

He urged the youth to join cluster policing committees to relieve elderly people who had worked tirelessly to prevent crime and also urged the committees to work hard to attain position one nationally.

Premium Nickel Resources chief executive officer, Mr Montwedi Mphathi thanked cluster policing committee members for volunteering to do a noble community work.
