Low turn up hinders land allocation progress

27 Jul 2022

Ngwaketse Land Board plans to allocate 21 974 plots in all its six sub-land boards by the end of this financial year.

The six land boards are Kanye, Moshupa, Mmathethe, Phitshane-Molopo, Mabutsane and Maokane.

Updating the public on land allocation and printing of Secure Land Title (SLT), during a media briefing in Gaborone, the board chairperson, Major General Odirile Mashinyana said the board faced challenges with the allocation process, which included low turn up by applicants and applications from those who already own plots.

He said despite efforts to clean up the waiting list, which stood at 157 381, they were still experiencing difficulties in locating those who had to be allocated land, but had either changed their contact numbers or postal addresses.

Major General Mashinyana further pleaded with all applicants on the waiting list to contact their relevant sub-land boards to confirm their contact details.

He, however, explained that in an effort to speed up the allocation process, the board had teamed up with the Southern District Council physical planners to speed up the layout designs.

“We are also at the stage of outsourcing three survey teams to demarcate 8 868 plots and we are also going to engage Department of Surveys and Mapping to demarcate some of the layouts” he said.

For his part, deputy board secretary, Mr Philip Makhura appealed to the public to register for Secure Land Titles (SLT) certificates within the six months grace period, noting that so far, they had received only 360 requests for Secure Land Title certificate registration and that 34 had already been issued.

Mr Makhura emphasised that Secure Land Titles were essential because they would help individuals and businesses to invest in land, allow private companies to borrow money using land as a collateral, expand job opportunities and enable government to collect property taxes, which were necessary to finance the provision of infrastructure and services to the people.
