13 Jul 2022

Ministry of  Local Government and Rural Development The Central District Council, carried out drain cleaning to facilitate easy flowing of water.

This according to Assistant Minister of  Local Government and Rural Development Mr Sethabelo Modukanele  followed a complaint about the storm water drainage infrastructure that passes through Botalaote, White City and Thomadithotse wards in Mahalapye.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele said the complaint was to the effect that water from the drainage was flooding the compound of the complainant.

Answering a parliamentary question on Tuesday, Mr Modukanele said his ministry, consulted with members of the public and that all engineering standards were followed during construction of the drainage infrastructure back in 1994.

Mr Modukanele said apart from the complainant mentioned, his ministry had not received any report on cracking of properties due to construction activities of the infrastructure.

“It is normal practice that before any project is undertaken in built up areas, consultations are carried out and assessments made.

Households affected in respect of this project were subjected to the same and all affected households were duly compensated during construction,” said the assistant minister.

Mahalapye West MP, Mr David Tshere had asked whether the ministry was aware of the danger posed by the storm water drainage infrastructure passing through Botalaote, White city and Thomadithotse wards in the Mahalapye West constituency.

Mr Tshere said the infrastructure was constructed too close to people’s compounds.

He also wanted to know if it was procedural to have the storm water drainage passing less than one metre from houses or buildings. Ends
