Poor work ethic worsening in public sector

A Botswana National Productivity Centre officer says judging by unimpressive results, poor work ethics in the public service had intensified.
Quoting the Global Competitive Report, Mr Kabo Solomon said Botswana had poor work ethics which was a possible impediment to foreign businesses setting up in the country.
Speaking during an advanced leadership and mindset change workshop in Gaborone yesterday, he said inefficiency thwarted economy growth and development in general.
Mr Solomon emphasised the need to increase productivity levels across all sectors of the economy and urged public service employees to improve service delivery.
He said it was vital for the public service to possess a good work ethic since it drove productivity which impacted on the national economy’s overall competitiveness.
“An improved public service is to advance the public good, help people and their communities to better society,” said Mr Solomon.
He said all the negativity could change if each individual took the responsibility to be productive, increase efficiency, transparency and accountability in the delivery of public services.
That would also complement job creation efforts, he said.
Mr Solomon said opportunities and benefits of improved service delivery did not end with better customer experience.
When organisations fine-tuned and optimised ways of delivering services; there would also be clear operational and financial benefits, he said.
Mr Solomon said better service delivery system meant efficiency of staff and other resources as well as time and cost savings.
The four-day programme attracted Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development employees.
Topics for discussion include, understanding the national agenda and capacity to implement it, developing attributes and growth mindset that create high performance, personal leadership through guided reflection and real time problem solving and collaborative leadership. BOPA
