Botswana leading by example - Kwape
10 Jul 2022
Botswana, as Africa’s longest running multi-party democracy will continue to advocate consolidation of democracy in the continent.
The country’s recent hosting of the International Summit on Democracy and Constitutionalism that ran here, from July 6-8, was proof its commitment to democracy.
The conference, which came against the backdrop of President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s commitment to promote dialogue around, consolidation of democracy in Africa, succeeded in its mandate, foreign affairs minister, Dr Lemogang Kwape said in an interview at the end of the summit, which Botswana co-hosted with the US-based National Democratic Institute (NDI).
Minister Kwape said as a democratic nation, Botswana was disturbed by the decay of democracy in a number of African countries, where military regimes had overthrown democratically elected governments.
“It vital for the continent to embrace democracy as a foundation for development and economic growth,” he said. Dr Kwape however said there was a ray of hope for the continent as some heads of state had shown commitment to democracy.
“I am pleased that the present and former African heads of state have committed to constitutionalism, with the present heads of state stating openly that they will relinquish power at the end of their terms,” he said.
The Minister thanked University of Botswana representatives for participating alongside their peers at the summit. With regard to Botswana, he said while the country had enjoyed democratic rule over the years, it should constantly be looking for ways to enhance its democracy.
He cited the ongoing exercise to get people’s views about how they wanted the constitutional to look as further testimony to Botswana’s commitment to democracy.
Dr Kwape said that only one party had ruled the country since independence was not because it was bullying opposition parties, but simply because the people preferred it over others.
“Citizens have been given opportunities to elect a government of their choice every five years and they continue to give the BDP a mandate,” he said. Minister Kwape said there was need to encourage women and youth participation in the democratic processes, adding President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi had determined to empower women, hence many now held senior positions in the public service.
