Spartans lead Basketball League
04 Nov 2013
Spartans have returned to the top of the men's Basketball League standings after winning three matches over the weekend.
They lead with 33 points now, one ahead of bitter rivals Troopers, who were inactive this weekend. The treble weekend triumph saw Spartans register their 14th successive league victory and breathe new life into their title defence.
They have played 17 matches and were left with three to complete the season, while undefeated Troopers had a game in hand. The defending champions began their weekend expedition with a narrow 67-60 success over a stubborn BDF V team at the SSKB basketball court on Friday night.
They followed up that with a comfortable 68-40 victory over struggling Warriors at the same venue on Saturday (November 2) afternoon. Sammy Bareki inspired the Gaborone giants to victory over the Warriors with nine baskets, including two three-pointers. He combined well in attack with Thuto Gaborone who scored seven baskets.
Spartans raced into a 21-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Warriors who have lost all their matches, improved in the last three quarters. Buxton Mucheniripi was the Warriors' best player. Despite being on the losing team, the stocky player produced brilliant attacking moves and scored 10 baskets. He was the leading points-scorer for his team.
Spartans went on to beat Bullets 89-52 during an evening match. Other weekend results: Cadets 76-58 Police, Cadets 69-82 Dolphins, Flames 58-53 BU Saints, Splinters 73-58 BU Saints. ENDS
