One of the few surving former WW II veteran, Mr Joseph Mosarwe was laid to rest on Saturday in Tonota.
The 101 year old Mosarwe died on June 23 in Tonota. Different speakers described him as a soldier of peace with good conduct.
A nephew, Mr Patrick Magowe said his uncle served in the WW II with distinction. “He was a soldier of peace and served the British army with distinction,” stated Mr Magowe.
He told mourners that Mosarwe carried himself well and was one of the respected figures in society who would be remembered for the love he had for his family and those around him.
“He loved his family and many respected him for that,” he added.
Another speaker and also a nephew, Mr Simon Magowe described Mosarwe as one of those who contributed to the development of the country in the early years of independence.
He said Mosarwe was a present father though he travelled a lot to fend for his family.
“He was a jolly person who loved and provided for his family,” he added.
Mr Magowe recalled that Mosarwe did not like to discuss his war experiences and rather focused on his job as a teacher.
Born in 1922 in Mmadinare as the eighth child in a family of 11 children.
He attended his primary education in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa before being recruited by the British army to serve in WW II.
Upon his return, Mosarwe studied to become a teacher and taught at various schools in Molepolole, Serowe, Makaleng, Matsitama, Nkange, Tonota and Shashemooke before he retired in 2001.
He later ventured into private business as a mechanic until age caught up with him.
He is survived by seven children, two men and five (5) women ENDS
