Kgatleng council to secure funds for Pilane landfill
22 Jun 2022
Kgatleng District Council is working round the clock to secure about P2 million to properly secure Pilane landfill.
In his address during the full council meeting on Monday, council chairperson, Mr Daniel Molokwe said while the council was pleading with government to fund construction of a new landfill, they were also in touch with the private sector for alternative solutions.
Mr Molokwe said finding a solution for Pilane landfill had become more urgent as its continued use despite having passed the designed lifespan by over 10 years had completely collapsed its management.
“The landfill by nature is a place where entry and exit from it is strictly controlled.
However, the current one is not fenced to keep scavengers away.
We need to secure the landfill in order to provide safety for workers and clients,” he said.
Mr Molokwe said given the rate of landfill fire occurrences , it had become necessary to relocate the landfill employees to a different site for safety measures with the estimated cost of relocation estimated at around P300 000.
He added that a certain company that was leased a portion of the landfill by Kgatleng District Development Foundation had vacated the site, leaving behind high volumes of untreated healthcare waste.
“The situation is a potential public health hazard.
It is against this realisation that the council has decided to invoke Section 32 of Waste Management Act that empowers it to remedy the situation and later claim [a refund] from the offender,” he said. ENDS
