Chabalala Phiri retain council leadership seats

Southern District Councillors have retained Messrs Thamiso Chabalala and Sonny Phiri as chairperson and deputy respectively.
This was during a special council meeting that was held in Kanye.
Standing Order 57 stipulates that the chairperson and deputy chairperson be elected once every two and half years from among members as prescribed under section 20 of the Local Government Act.
Councillor Chabalala of Botswana Democratic Party gathered 55 votes against Councillor Lazarous Ncube of Umbrella for Democratic Change who got nine votes.
For he position of deputy chairperson Councillor Phiri was unoposed, rendering him an obvious occupant for the seat.
In his acceptance, Councillor Chabalala thanked his fellow democrats for believing in their leadership, hence electing them for a second term.
“We are especially thankful because we understand that we are neither more intelligent nor wiser than all of you,” he said.
He commended fellow councillors for the continued support and guidance they afforded them during the previous term, adding that it had enabled the leadership to perform to the best of their abilities.
“We will be together for the next two and half years with the belief that we will continue to work closely together, more efficiently and effectively considering there are lessons learnt from our previous term,” stated Councillor Chabalala.
Meanwhile, at the Kanye Administrative Authority, the chairperson, ouncillors Simon Ramaphoi and deputy, Sebati Kabomo retained their seats.
Moshupa Sub-district councillors also retained councilors Peter Sethibe and Obakeng Modisaotsile as chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.
Mabutsane Sub-district councillors elected councillors Poloko Motswaise and Tshupontle Kgetsi as chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.
The two take over from councillors Kgopotso Setammere-Ramosesame and Ernest Pule, who were elected the sub-council chairperson and deputy chairperson in 2019.
Good Hope Sub-district Council retained Councillor Binniface Lesomo as chairperson.
He will be deputised by Councillor Ketlogile Keipeile, who takes over from fellow democrat, Councillor Beach Mooketsane. ENDS
