Legislator advocates for district status

02 Jun 2022

Member of Parliament for Sefhare/Ramokgonami, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang says elevating Tswapong to a fully fledged district is long overdue.

Addressing a kgotla meeting in Machaneng on Wednesday, Dr Gobotswang said the population and vastness of the region qualified it to be a stand-alone district.

He said a full district with two sub-districts was ideal for easy access of services since currently, people were being assisted in Mahalapye, Palapye and Serowe.

The legislator highlighted that there was need for establishment of a full council and also an office of the district commissioner, adding that such a move would see more developments and services coming to Tswapong.

“We cannot develop as a region when we are still accessing services in other villages such as Mahalapye. Tswapong is big, even in terms of population,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr Gobotswang said people of Tswapong should reach a consensus that the region be re-named Tswapong South.

Big as it is, the MP said it was sad that Tswapong was the only district with no council emblem.

In Chadibe, Mr Gosetsemang December concurred with the MP on the need for an establishment of a fully fledged council, saying it would be a progressive move.

He said accessing services in Mahalapye was cumbersome and costly.

Ms Selebogo Segwabe appealed to relevant authorities to revisit payments for people who supplied schools with bread and farm produce since the council purchased at low prices.

On another matter, Dr Gobotswang told residents that government had taken a decision not to undertake any new projects this financial year, rather complete existing ones and carry maintenance works.

He, however, assured constituents that this financial year Constituency Community Projects funds had been availed after a two-year halt due to COVID-19.

For maintenance, he said government had instructed that works be awarded to local contractors.

He, therefore, encouraged contractors to register their companies with Public Procurement and Assert Disposal Board for them to qualify to bid for public projects.
