Saleshando rues UDC status quo

17 May 2022

The Botswana Congress Party is discontent with the current status quo of the running of the Umbrella for Democratic Change.

Speaking at the BCP leadership forum in Palapye over the weekend, party president, Mr Dumelang Saleshando said there was a major clash of values at the UDC on how the organisation should run. He said when they joined UDC, it was agreed that there would be a constitution that would be followed or guide going forward for a better coalition adding however, that the constitution was never followed.

M Saleshando said the BCP believed in democratisation of the UDC, which seemed to be lacking.

He also complained that the 2019 general elections were not even spearheaded by the UDC national executive committee as per the norm.

Even worse, he said, an evaluation of the 2019 general elections, was never conducted.

To discuss issues of concern, Mr Saleshando said they had requested a special congress, and the central committee had directed that the meeting should be convened before July.

On other issues, Mr Saleshando said indiscipline ruled the roost within the BCP, and the party should consider disciplinary action against those who dragged its name in the mud.

He also said that as the BCP, they would want to retain all the seats they won in 2019 and even increase them.

The BCP president said they would also by 2022 and 2023 embark on a robust recruitment drive of the youth into the party.. ends
