Rollers halt Chiefs impressive run

29 Oct 2013

Township Rollers caused an upset on Sunday afternoon (October 27) when they ended blood rivals’ Mochudi Centre Chiefs’ unbeaten record with an emphatic 2-1 victory in a be Mobile Premier League encounter played at the University of Botswana stadium.

After a disappointing start to the 2013/14 be Mobile campaign, the Gaborone West based giants dusted themselves up and gave a spirited performance against Chiefs, stealing the much needed win at death through a clinical finish from Obonye Moswate after Chiefs top marksman Bonolo Frazer had cancelled Sekhana Koko’s ice breaker minutes into the second half.

Rollers aka Mapalastina could have wrapped up the game mid-way through the second half but a careless strike from the penalty spot by Kenanao Kgetholetsile went agonizingly wide.

Rollers made their presence felt from the start forcing Magosi to retreat in large numbers into their own half and absorb pressure in the opening 10 minutes. Had luck struck, the home team could have gone ahead twice on the opening minutes but Koko and Jerome Louis became a bit wasteful.

Rollers held on to the lead deep in the second half and Chiefs realising time was running out gained confidence in going forward but it was never meant to be as Mapalastina’s defence stood firm to bag the three needed points.

Still in the be Mobile campaign, Patrick Kaunda increased his tally to nine for the top goal scorer award when his team FC Satmos shared the spoils with BMC. Koko’s strike means he is just two goals shy of second placed marksman Frazer.

After the weekend games BDF XI remained perched at the top with 22 points after winning seven of their eight league games. Chiefs come close on 21 points followed by newcomers FC Satmos and Orapa United with 16 and 15 points respectively closing the top four bracket.

And Rollers are on the fifth spot after a quantum leap from the last four games they played. At the other end of the table BMC and Extension Gunners will have to work a little bit harder to impress the hard to please Lobatse community.

The two Lobatse teams are languishing at the bottom of the log with four points to Gunners from their nine games, while BMC plods with a single point from their three outings. ENDS
