08 May 2022
The President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has said he will solicit further support from stakeholders for Botswana to host the Kimberly Process Secretariat as the Cape Town Mining Indaba kicks off this morning.
“It is imperative that I attend the Mining Indaba as this will give me the opportunity to engage those stakeholders I have not engaged regarding Botswana’s desire to host the Kimberly Process Secretariat,” he said.
Dr Masisi said Botswana owed its development and success to proper management and control of diamonds and would therefore like other countries to learn from her.
The President will give a Presidential address and present a lecture at a seminar for mining companies during the conference.
Meanwhile a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the President will join other Heads of State to deliberate on developments in the mining industry in Africa.
Government ministers, senior executives from the mining sector as well as other key stakeholders from across Africa and other regions will attend the conference.
“Botswana’s participation at the conference will enable the country to market its mineral potential to investors and engage with key stakeholders in the mining industry on a range of issues, including innovation in mining technology, mining and sustainable development as well as green minerals and clean energy,” it states.
Ministers Lemogang Kwape and Lefoko Moagi of foreign affairs and minerals and energy respectively, and senior government officials are accompanying the President.
The conference is held under the theme: Evolution of African Mining: Investing in the Energy Transition, ESG and the Economies. Ends
