Home Economics not just a subject

20 Apr 2022

Mahutagane Junior Secondary School in Shoshong recently celebrated Home Economics Day by donating toiletry to 25 less privileged pupils as well as two blankets and some fencing material to Ms Gaolathe Basiame of Bokaa Ward in Shoshong.

Guest speaker and Lecheng’s Mokgalo JSS Home Economics teacher, Ms Wame Oitsile applauded the school management for recognising the importance of a subject she described as the art and science of home management.

She said the subject sought to build resilient learners who could face any challenge.

“We are imparting knowledge to the young ones so that they can also be able to impart it to their families.

Everything that is taught at Home Economics can easily be applied in our homes because it’s a big subject that covers textiles, cooking as well as home keeping,” stated Ms Oitsile.

She said the subject helped with healthy eating, to avoid diet related diseases and she  encouraged parents to ensure learners practiced acquired skills at home.

Mahutagane JSS head, Mr Moleri Makuku was happy that the number of boys who enrolled for Home Economics continued to increase, an indication that it was an inclusive subject.

Mr Makuku explained that Ms Basiame was identified through Home Economics department charity work.

“We’ve been with Ms Basiame for two years and we’ve already built her a toilet and also connected a water tap for her. With today’s donation, we want to further improve her life,” stated Mr Makuku.

Shoshong North councillor, Mr Moineedi Bagaisamang encouraged learners to take the subject seriously, as it played a role in building homes.

The day was themed: Building Resilient Homes and Families. ENDS
