Maun experiences peaceful crime free Easter

19 Apr 2022

Peace prevailed in Maun over the Easter Holidays in the midst of entertainment and sport festivals.

Maun police station commander, Assistant Superintendent Chenamo Orateng, said in an interview that there were no fatal road accidents or horrendous crimes recorded in Maun.

He said the multitudes who thronged the Mascom Derby horse race were absorbed by the action on the horse tracks than on any crime, something which he said was commendable.

Assistant Supt Orateng stated that police were visible all around Maun and mounted check points at three main entrances from Chanoga, Shorobe and Komana.

The station commander applauded motorists and pedestrians for cooperating with the police at all check points and thanked residents as well as visitors for their good behaviour, urging them to maintain such in future.

For his part, Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) CEO, Mr Mooketsi Tlhagwane who was at the Komana-Maun road checkpoint, said motorists were compliant as they even took time off to check for vehicle road worthiness upon being instructed to do so by law enforcement officers.

He highlighted that MVA was aware of the buzz in Maun during Easter Holidays, hence intensifying their visibility and public education alongside the police.

Mr Tlhagwane said they had observed that pedestrians wore headphones while walking along or crossing roads, which was risky.

He also urged them to wear reflective or bright colours to make themselves visible to motorists, especially at night, to avoid accidents.

He said it was imperative to plan trips, take breaks when driving long distances and drink lots of water.

Mr Tlhagwane revealed that from January 1 to April 17 this year, 102 lives were lost compared to 98 last year, adding that of these, 81 were men and 21 women.

He said it was important for people to always be vigilant, especially at night, stressing ‘having fun should be done in a responsible manner so that we all get back home safe and sound’. ENDS
