No change in education cost sharing rates

The rates for cost sharing of five per cent  at secondary level introduced have remained unchanged since 2006.

Basic and education assistant minister, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja said that the rates for cost sharing had remained unchanged over years at P300 per annum for junior secondary and P450 per annum for senior secondary education.

She added that the estimated direct costs of providing junior secondary education was P24 678 per child and P24 328 per annum for senior secondary education.

On the other hand, she indicated that enrollments in junior secondary schools in October 2021 was 129 820 children and at 51,396 at senior level.

“The ministry has 207 junior secondary schools, two unified schools and 32 senior secondary schools,” she added.

The assistant minister further indicated that there were no fees charged at primary level.

“Many schools have PTAs which charge fees such as development fees PTA levy, among others and it is believed that these fees are agreed with the parents,” she said.

Jwaneng/Mabutsane MP, Mr Mephato Reatile had asked the minister to state the government’s costs of education each learner at junior and senior secondary school as well as the total number of learners in junior and secondary schools as at October 2021.

He also wanted to know the total number of schools at junior and senior level. ENDS
