Govt spends over P20m on Red Cross
06 Apr 2022
Government has given a total of P20.9 million subvention to Botswana Red Cross Society in the last five years. Presidential affairs, governance and public administration assistant minister, Mr Dumezweni Mthimkhulu explained on April 5 that the intended purpose of the subvention was to extend government support to the organisation to cover its administrative costs as it responds to disaster management, health emergencies as well as other social challenges in communities countrywide.
“The Red Cross accounts to government through submission of annual and financial audit reports. I can confirm that the money is used for the intended purpose since government is represented in the board,” Mr Mthimkhulu said.
The assistant minister was responding to Francistown South MP, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi’s requests for him to state how much subvention had been given to the Red Cross Society in the last five years and for what purpose. He also wanted to know how the Red Cross accounted to government and if the latter knew if the money was used for the intended purpose.ENDS
