Ministry to improve internal roads
05 Apr 2022
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, through Kgalagadi District Council, will continue to improve the quality of the riding surface of internal roads.
Answering a question in Parliament on Monday, assistant minister, Ms Talita Monnakgotla said such would be done through spot improvement, gravelling earth roads as well as patching potholes through the normal budgeting process.
Ms Monnakgotla said due to budgetary constraints and other competing priorities, most of which were occasioned by the 2008 economic downturn, it had not been possible to accommodate the subsequent phases of the village infrastructure that were to include storm water drainage system and additional tarred roads.
“I cannot commit to a definitive timelines or phasing of these works as they did not form part of the National Development Plan 12,” the assistant minister said.
Ms Monnakgotla also told Parliament that the total distance planned for tarring of internal roads in Tsabong was 21 kilometres of tarred roads.
The planned 21 kilometres construction implemented at over P48.6 million, she said, was constructed and completed in 24 months, from January 21, 2006 to January 20, 2008.
Ms Monnakgotla was responding to a question from Kgalagadi South legislator, Mr Sam Brooks, who had requested the minister to state, among others, the total distance of the initial plan of tarring of Tsabong internal roads as well as the amount that was budgeted for the exercise.Mr Brooks also wanted to know when the remaining roads would be covered.
