Sex offenders registration coming
03 Apr 2022
Sex offenders will soon face tougher consequences for their actions, Defence, justice and security Minister Mr Kagiso Mmusi has warned.
Speaking during the official opening of Botswana Police Service staff houses in Tsabong on March 31 the minister said plans were underway to create a sex offenders’ register, which would negatively affect their future.
The register was one of several strategies that government was employing to curb Gender Based Violence (GBV), he said.
The minister warned that once entered in the register, sex offenders would find it difficult to be accepted for certain community undertakings and may never get a job.
Therefore, he said, it was important for people to refrain from such offenses to secure their future.
He said GBV was the elephant in the room and needed to be tackled by all.
“Even with resources, police efforts alone cannot effectively fight crime and other social ills confronting the country such as GBV and child abuse. Community efforts for effective policing are necessary,” he said.
He urged members of the community to continue associating with and contributing fully towards community policing.
“This is more important, given the increasing dynamics and sophistication of modern crime as demonstrated by increasing transnational organised nature of crime and its transition in cyberspace,” he said. BOPA
