Budgetary constraints stall police stations construction
21 Mar 2022
Construction of police stations in Ghanzi with 30 staff houses and Kalkfontein with 26 houses were deferred due to budgetary constraints.
Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Kagiso Mmusi said this in response to a question in Parliament recently.
Mr Mmusi said there were no plans to construct a police station in Ncojane either.
Again, he said due to budgetary constraints, only Ghanzi police station with 50 staff houses had been prioritised for inclusion in the 12th National Development Plan (NDP 12) due to re-prioritisation within the limited budget.
He added that Kalkfontein would, however, not be among police stations to be included in the NDP 12.
He said Ghanzi, compared to Kalkfontein, had grown significantly in terms of popularity, economic and social developments taking place in the area.
“These developments have realised an increase in crime levels from 2019 to date.
Crime statistics reflect that Ghanzi has dealt with 658 cases compared to Kalkfontein’s 183 reported cases.”
In other issues, the minister said the new Motheo Mine in Ghanzi also required that the township be policed, hence Ghanzi police station with 50 staff houses was prioritised for inclusion in the NDP 12.
Mr Mmusi was answering a question from Ghanzi South MP, Mr Motsamai Motsamai, who wanted to know if there were plans to build new police stations in Ncojane, Kalkfontein and Ghanzi. ENDS
