First Lady donates to Womens Shelter
13 Mar 2022
The First Lady, Ms Neo Masisi, in partnership with Boteti East MP, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe recently donated 1211 bricks to Botswana Council of Women in Letlhakane.
The donation was made in response to BCW’s plea for sponsorship to build a women’s shelter in Letlhakane.
Mr Lelatisitswe also donated 40 bags of cement to support the project, which came as a result of the alarming number of gender based violence (GBV) cases in Boteti.
The sub-district experienced many cases of women who needed to be provided with a sanctuary especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns, but could not be assisted due to lack of a facility.
When handing over the donation, the MP, who said the facility would help to reduce the number of lives lost due to GBV, adding that in many cases, victims were dependents of their abusers and did not have anywhere else to go.
Mr Lelatisitswe commended the BCW for the initiative, saying the shelter came at the right time. The BCW chairperson, Ms Esther Thanke thanked their benefactors, saying the donation would help the project take off.
Ms Thanke said they requested for funding of the project during one of the GBV meetings the First Lady addressed in Letlhakane. ENDS
