Women in tourism to celebrate womens month
28 Feb 2022
Women in Tourism Botswana will host a tutu walk in celebration of the International women’s month.
The event, which is slated for Friday, will see men and women in tutu skirts walk around the Gaborone Central Building District, with the Hilton Gardens Inn as the start and finish point.
In an interview, the founder and president of Women in Tourism Botswana, Ms Bokani Mathape said the event was a build up to the second annual women in tourism Botswana symposium, scheduled for March 25.
She said both events seek to commemorate International Women’s Month by creating a platform where women in the tourism industry could network and share ideas on how to better the industry. Ms Mathape said the wearing of tutu skirts was meant to honour the day, adding that the walk was a combination of activism and fitness.
She said the tourism and hospitality industry in Botswana was doing well, relating to this year’s theme of Breaking the Bias as ‘we see quite a number of stereotypes being settled. For example, we have female guides, polers and lodge managers, something that was odd back in the day’.
The Women in Tourism president also said companies were now intentional about women being in the c-suite and leading organisations.
Women in tourism seeks to form a solid network of women in the tourism sector, through advocacy, mentoring and empowering each other in the industry among others.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrated annually on March 8, to commemorate the cultural, political and socioeconomic achievements of women. ends
