Government encourages urban and peri-urban agriculture and the programme has been included in the draft Agricultural Development and Transformation Policy.

ssistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi told Parliament that government encouraged urban and peri-urban agriculture as it was one of the initiatives to increase food production, create employment opportunities and fight poverty.

Mr Molebatsi said, “We do not have a policy for urban agriculture, but we believe urban and peri-urban agriculture is relevant.”

Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central, Mr Tumisang Healy had asked the Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security if there was a policy on Urban Agriculture and what the ministry was currently doing in relation to the policy. ENDS
