Premier league battle intensifies

15 Feb 2022

As the BTC Premiership reaches three games past the half mark in what many often christen ‘the beginning of the end,’ teams can no longer afford to bask in the excuse that they are in the building process.

At week 18, it is only logical to conclude that all tactics have been tried and tested, combinations found, weaknesses and strengths assessed and players jelled into competent units, with what is only expected being to hit the top gear and no looking back.

One team that has been in the driver’s seat from the beginning, Gaborone United is still enjoying the power of looking down at all the others.

Moyagoleele have been in control since the league began and are currently perched at the top of the log standings with a solid four-point gap from the nearest challengers in Township Rollers.

GU, however, would have faced a daunting task in their next game against Jwaneng Galaxy, but was postponed.

Galaxy sit at position three and are on a quest to boost their status among the top teams and would have loved to avenge the heavy 5-1 loss they suffered at home to their rivals in the first round.

The two giants were initially supposed to meet on Sunday, but the game had to be postponed as Galaxy were on CAF Champions League duty away to Esperance de Tunis where they suffered a heavy 4-0 loss.

The fixture has been moved again and a date between the two has not been set yet.

Moving the spotlight away from GU, Notwane are perhaps the biggest winner of the weekend, having travelled to highflying Sua Flamingoes and emerged with a healthy 4-1 win against all expectation.

With Flamingoes in a rich vein of form and sitting among the top four, many expected them to have an easy walk in the park at home against a Notwane side that was before the game sitting at position two from the bottom, just above struggling Mahalapye Railways Highlanders.

The result of the game meant that Notwane leapfrogged Mogoditshane Fighters, who lost 3-1 to Extension Gunners while Flamingoes dropped out of the top four, swapping positions with Orapa United who played to a one-all draw with BDF XI.

Extension Gunners are also worthy a mention among the weekend winners as the Peleng giants continue to enjoy a rich form that has been eluding them over the years.

Gunners, under the guidance of the youthful Wame ‘Pepezinho’ Mokoke have been doing pretty well, even having their topman, Kabelo Babusi as the current top goal scorer with 13 goals.

Babusi nudged ahead of both GU’s Thatayaone Kgamanyane and Thabang Sesinyi of Galaxy who were out of action this weekend.

Another Gunners striker, Odirile Lekoba is also not far behind as he has struck 11 times in 18 games!

Meanwhile Security Systems enjoyed the biggest margin on wins when they overcame MR Highlanders 5-0, but without taking the shine from the alarm boys, many would not give the win much credit as the Mahalapye lads have been the punching bag of everybody else in the league, having only claimed just one win and four draws out of 18 games.

In other games, Prisons XI were held to a 2-2 draw by Morupule Wanderers while Masitaoka and Police XI also played to a 3-3 stalemate.
Gilport Lions lost by a solitary goal, at home against Township Rollers. ENDS
