Integrate gender equality in parenting- official

14 Feb 2022

It is imperative for women to embrace and integrate gender equality in parenting and everyday lessons to their children as this is the quickest way to achieve gender equality today and tomorrow.
An official from Department of Social and Community Development in Molepolole, Ms Dineo Segobai said this during commemoration for both International Women’s Day and World Cancer Day at Molepolole main Kgotla Friday.
“As we celebrate mothers for being the first teacher, friend, guide, philosopher and even psychologist for everyone ever born, we should always emphasise and continue to raise awareness that women are entitled to all human rights also,” she said.
Ms Segobai, who is Principal Social Welfare Officer II, also explained that for women to understand that they had power to instill gender equality today and in the future, the nation especially men needed to make them understand and feel that they were entitled to human rights including civil, political, economic, social, cultural, environmental as well as the right to peace.
She mentioned that doing so, women would find it easy to teach the young generation about gender equality.
Also speaking at the event, an official from Gender Affairs department in Molepolole, Ms Tlamelo Obotseng said it was necessary to have events like International Women’s Day so as to create an enabling environment where women’s rights were recognised as an indispensable part of human rights.
“Also events like this create an environment where women and men have the same opportunities to realise their full potential,” she added.
Ms Obotseng, who is Gender Officer II explained that improving equality between men and women was essential in Botswana’s response to addressing development changes.
She also stated that even though women’s equality had made some positive gains, the world still remained unequal hence women should be encouraged to participate in events like this so that they had the platform to share ideas on how to improve their social, economic and political situations.
