The UCCSA Church has been hailed for its invaluable contribution to the socioeconomic development of Botswana.
Speaking during a heritage walk for the Ramotswa UCCSA church in Taung on Saturday, Ramotswa MP, Mr Lefoko Moagi said government was thankful of the peaceful coexistence and would continue to nurture the partnership with the religious sector for socioeconomic growth.
He said the church also played a critical role towards the political self-governance of the country.
“This was led by the London Missionary Society (LMS) church ministers, the process which led to attainment of our independence.
It is therefore not surprising that the first mayors of Gaborone and Francistown were LMS/UCCSA ministers,” he said.
Mr Moagi appealed to the congregation to be tolerant and embrace each other so that they moved in the same direction.
He said the works of the UCCSA formerly LMS had shaped the history of Botswana in every aspect.“I have been informed that the church’s contribution to the socioeconomic development of Botswana was priceless.
For instance the ruins of the first clinic that was established at Kolobeng are still visible in the very same place that we are in.
The UCCSA just like its predecessors continues to be involved in Botswana’s development as reflected by the existence of institutions such as Moeding College, Maun Senior, Lephoi Centre2, Kgodisong orphanage centre and other community based initiatives,” he added.Mr Moagi noted that UCCSA in Botswana had about 150 churches which were divided into six regions and national office. He pledged P6 000 towards the church’s coffers.
For her part, Reverend Bonolo Mmereki-Burns of the Ramotswa Congregational church commended her congregation for showing faith amidst difficult times. She said this made the nation to also grow in faith due to the exploits of her church.
Reverend Mmereki-Burns said the heritage walk were part of the bigger project that aimed at promoting and preserving the UCCSA Synod of Botswana historical sites. ENDS
