GCC reserves over 400 empty plots

About 404 empty plots have been reserved by the Gaborone City Council for different activities including business and community services. The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Sethabelo Modukanele said this in response to a question in Parliament on Tuesday.

He said 17 open spaces had been targeted to be leased out to local businesses and non-profit organisations for development of recreational activities. He said out of the 17 open spaces, 10 had been leased out to private entities for development while seven were developed through donations.Mr Modukanele further said 32 open spaces had been handed to ward development committees and 20 had been handed to the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development to be leased out.

The Gaborone City council has identified 20 more spaces and they would be advertised for private sector development and community organisations.

The Gaborone Central MP, Mr Tumisang Healey had asked the minister to state the number and types of open spaces in Gaborone. He also wanted the minister to state the number targeted for leasing and development as well as the number of Batswana employed from such enterprises.ENDS
