School construction at tender stage
10 Feb 2022
Construction of a new primary school at Shakawe is at tendering stage, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Talita Monnakgotla has said.
Answering a question in Parliament on Wednesday, she said the project entailed 22 classrooms and 21 staff houses. Ms Monnakgotla said Shakawe Primary School has a learner population of 1 027 and 22 classrooms hence a decision was taken to transfer some of the pupils to another primary school in the village which was not congested. In addition, Ms Monnakgotla said even though more classrooms were needed at the school, the complex was fully occupied by the current structures and there was no room for expansion, hence a decision to construct a fully-fledged primary school in the village.
She said the new project would also address the challenge of shortage of accommodation for teachers. Ms Monnakgotla also appealed to the community to take advantage of the current shortage of accommodation of teachers by constructing houses to be rented out to teachers and by so doing increasing their income generation. Okavango MP, Mr Kenny Kapinga had asked the assistant minister to state when the last inspection of classrooms at Shakawe Primary School and teachers’ accommodation was done Mr Kapinga also wanted to be appraised on the findings of the inspection.
