No special duty allowance for warders

09 Feb 2022

Prisons officers ranking below senior superintendent are not entitled to special duty allowance as stipulated in the Botswana Prisons Service (BPS) White Paper of 2020-2021 because they do not execute death penalty.

Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Kagiso Mmusi said this in response to a question in Parliament on February 8. Minister Mmusi said junior officers only did their daily task of taking care of prisoners including those on death row.

Serowe North MP, Mr Baratiwa Mathoothe had asked the minister to state why officers below the rank of senior superintendent were not paid the special duty allowances. He had also asked the minister if he was aware that officers performed special duties from the day an accused person was charged with murder until the day of execution. ENDS
