Commission starts work

The Presidential Commission of Enquiry into the Review of the Constitution begins its work on Wednesday next week, with its initial consultation meeting in the village of Gabane. The Commission, according to an itinerary released by its secretariat yesterday, will then visit Mmankgodi and Tlokweng on Thursday and Friday respectively.
A press release from the commission secretariat says it will, in its meetings, seek the views of Batswana, on the operation of the constitution and, in particular, its strengths and weaknesses; Assess its adequacy, in asserting Botswana’s identity, principles, aspirations and values; promoting and protecting people’s rights; promoting equality; and promoting national unity and democracy.
The release says the commission will articulate the concerns of the people of Botswana as regards the amendments that may be required for a review of the constitution.
Further, says the release, the commission will conduct enquiries and obtain information from sources that it considers relevant in the execution of its mandate; make any recommendations on the review or amendment of the constitution, on the basis of what it would have gathered from the people.
The release goes on to say that upon completion of its enquiry, the commission will submit a report with recommendations to President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, not later than the end of September 2022.
“The Itinerary of the Commission is being published for members of the public to note the times and places of the meetings.
The public is encouraged to participate in this important national exercise and express their views and proposals during the scheduled meetings,” says the release.
