Kgatleng prioritises six projects for NDP 12 DDP 9

27 Jan 2022

Kgatleng District councillors have adopted six priority projects with amendments as proposed by the District Development Committee (DDC) for the next planning period.

The period covers National Development Plan 12 (NDP12) and the District Development Plan 9 (DDP 9) and will commence on April 2023 and end in March 2028.

Presenting the six priority projects to district authorities during a special full council meeting in Mochudi on Monday, Kgatleng District Council chief planner, Mr Godfrey

Raditlhoko said the six projects included the relocation and upgrading of Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital to 400 beds, and the school of nursing, expanding the Pilane Landfill and construction and tarring of the Modipane, Dikwididi and Mabalane gravel road.

Other projects include the design and construction of a storm water drainage system in Mochudi planning area, the relocation of the wastewater treatment pond from Boseja North and the expansion of the sewer network in Mochudi.

Mr Raditlhoko said Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital bed capacity was 120 and the plan was to relocate the facility to a 16 hectare plot in Rasesa.

Upon completion, he said the hospital would offer more services, improve access to health services for Kgatleng residents and also serve as a referral centre for all clinics and health posts in the district.

He added that the hospital would offer specialised services to all the 22 villages in Kgatleng District.

“These villages currently have access to health facilities only in the form of health posts and clinics offering basic services such as outpatient consulting and maternity services,” he stated.

He said the Pilane Landfill had surpassed its lifespan and that it attracted scavengers that burned waste, thereby posing a health hazard to people living in the proximity of the landfill, as well being unsightly especially to motorist on the A1 highway.

Mr Raditlhoko said the proposed Modipane, Dikwididi and Mabalane road project would link the south-eastern corridor of the district and also serve as the main access road to major service centres as well as commercial and industrial hubs and agricultural projects along river villages.

He noted that the design and construction of a storm water drainage system in the Mochudi planning area was meant to alleviate the poor drainage system, which caused floods and damaged the road infrastructure as well as property.

The council chief planner said the relocation of the wastewater treatment pond was meant to cater for the proper disposal of wastewater and the prevention of obnoxious smells from the ponds, while the expansion of the sewer network would cover a greater percentage of the district’s population and all major commercial and industrial activities in the area.

He said other projects that were considered low impact would be funded through existing alternative sources such as Community Constituency Funds, Ipelegeng Funds and Village Development Community funds.

Mr Raditlhoko noted that they included the construction of health posts, installation of tower lights, paving of internal roads, construction of staff houses in different villages and the maintenance and electrification of VDC houses National Development Plan 11 (NDP 11) and the District Development Plan 8 (DDP 8) both come to an end on 31 March 2023, paving the way for the next plan period.
