Poor performance lack of funds affects sponsorship
26 Jan 2022
The Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology is unable to sponsor students who failed and discontinued two to three back due to lack of funds.
Dr Douglas Letsholathebe said since there were no funds to sponsor such students, the ministry was conducting a survey to collect data from affected students in order to inform decision making and planning which would include budgeting for them.
The minister said education and training providers had career guidance and counselling facilities where students could receive psycho-social support to assist them to cope with the demands and challenges of their programmes of study, including reasons for failure.
“The ministry therefore wishes to leave those services to education and training providers,” he said.
North East District representative, Kgosi Sibangani Mosojane had wanted to know if the ministry would consider providing a budget for students who were discontinued from school two to three years ago, and if they would also consider engaging social workers in order to establish why students did not perform to the required standard.
