Council to fully outsource refuse collection

26 Jan 2022

Mogoditshane/Thamaga Sub-district Council intends to outsource domestic waste collection in all areas of the sub-district to private companies.

Senior assistant council secretary Ms Losika Mosarwa said in an interview that the sub-district covered 12 areas. She said the council was already outsourcing the service to eight of the villages.

“Only Tsolamosese, Mmokolodi, Tloaneng and Nkoyaphiri are still serviced by the council, but going forward, and funds permitting, the council intends to outsource all the areas to serve people living in the district equally,” she said She pleaded with Batswana to pay refuse collection fees to ensure the success outsourcing initiative.

Ms Mosarwa praised outsourced companies for performing their duties well.

Principal environmental officer Ms Flora Mathodi said the 12 areas covered by council were Gakgatla, Kubung, Thamaga, Ramaphatle, Mmankgodi, Kumakwane, Mmokolodi, Tloaneng, Mogoditshane, Gabane, Metsemotlhabe and Mmopane. She said while the sub-district council was expected to provide domestic waste collection in all the villages, it had shortage of resources, hence the outsourcing of refuse collection.

She explained that Gakgatla, Kububung and Ramaphatle litter collection companies were those using donkey carts.

The council had set refuse points in the villages for them to dispose off the waste, with council trucks coming fortnightly for collection.

Ms Mathodi said Thamaga was divided into South/West, and North/East with two companies engaged to service the two areas, noting that Mmankgodi, Kumakwane and Gabane had each one company servicing them.

“We have also outsourced the service to Mogoditshane Central, Ledumadumane, Mogoditshane Block 9, Metsemotlhabe, Mmopane Block 1 and Mmopane,” Ms Mathodi said. ENDS
