Make learning environment fun - official

25 Jan 2022

The school environment should be fun and induce passion for learning. North West District basic education regional director, Ms Veronica Mochotlhi said this at the ongoing Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) induction workshop in Maun.

TaRL is a methodology designed to boost learning through employment of fun activities. Ms Mochotlhi stated that the TaRL approach took multiple pathways, which allowed learners to identify and nurture talent.

She said the approach ensured that when they completed standard seven, learners would have identified their strengths in different subjects, including sport and music.

“It is important for learners to be fulfilled academically and talent wise. Visual aids in the form of tools found in an area like stones and sticks can be used to reinforce learning; interactive activities are always fun for learners,” she said.

However, Ms Mochotlhi pointed out that the approach was not new to teachers because it was part of their training, and the workshop was only a refresher for them.

Ms Moitshepi Matsheng, whose company, Young Love provides the training, said TaRL was an enrichment programme designed to boost basic numeracy and literacy skills.

She also explained the programme assessed and grouped learners according to their ability.

“It is imperative to monitor the performance and behaviour of learners during this exercise to identify their strengths,” she said Ms Matsheng said the programme had already been rolled out in North East and Chobe Districts where it had produced exceptional results. The workshop ends on Friday. ends
