Bobonong hosts cross country event Saturday

New Vision Athletics Club will hold a cross country race in Bobonong on Saturday to help athletes prepare for the track and field event billed for Francistown next month.
The track and field competition is one of the many events that athletes use to qualify for national and international competitions such as the Africa Senior Championships, World Senior Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
Before the Francistown track and field tussle, the athletes will compete in another cross country series in Sua under the auspices of the Sua Athletics Club
Botswana Athletics Association coordinator, Mpho Bagwasi, explained that the Selebi Phikwe-based Athletics Club would use the Bobonong facility because it has a better track than the one in Selebi Phikwe.
He said they expected over 200 athletes from the northern region to take part in the competitions, The athletes, he noted, would be from 22 athletic clubs in the northern region.
The northern coordinator also emphasised that participants would be required to comply with all COVID-19 regulations.
He also said they would be expected to present their vaccination cards and a negative test done within 24 hours.
“Coaches started preparations in October last year and athletes have been training hard,” said Bagwasi.
Athletes will compete in the 10km race for men and women, 8km for junior men and women and 6km for youth.
The competitions start at 2pm at Agosi Primary School. ENDS
