The annual P10million allocation to constituencies should be channeled towards improving student results in Maun West, should the funds become available, Maun West Member of Parliament Mr Dumelang has proposed.
The legislator made the suggestion during a kgotla meeting with Shashe ward residents in Maun on Monday during which he complained about appalling results of leaners in his constituency.
Mr Saleshando reasoned that a friendly, student-centred learning environment would spur learners to perform better academically.
He the world had become a giant technological village and efforts should be made to speed up internet connectivity in schools to facilitate independent learning and research by students.
P10 million Constituency Development fund expected in the next financial year could be used to achieve that, he said.
Mr Saleshando observed that schools in the North West region performed poorly academically as compared to schools in other districts and urged parents and the village leadership to partake in their children’s school work
On other issues he said there was hope Nata-Maun to Shakawe road would be provided for in the next national budget.
He also said the tourism sector also showed signs of a rebound.
However, he expressed concern about shortage of doctors and medication at Letsholathebe Hospital and in the district as a whole.
Shashe Primary School Head Ms Enayang Kekgonegile said performance-wise the North West Region stood at position nine out of 10 regions nationally while Shashe Primary School occupied position 47 out of 74 schools in the North West region.
The school’s pass rate was 54.8 per cent in 2020 but dropped to 51.9 per cent in 2021. Ms Kekgonegile further encouraged parents to enrol their children for reception classes to stimulate their learning.
Giving an update, Shashe ward Village Development Committee chairperson Ms Bahentse Kafaes-Rena said they managed to build two LA2 houses with the Constituency Development Fund.
She explained the rentals would be used to generate income for the VDC. ENDS
