The Institute of Industrial Health and Safety Management (IIHSM) on Monday graduated six prison officers it sponsored to do a course in first AID.

The training was offered as part of the company’s social responsibility drive, its marketing Officer for, Mr Shathiso Makhumalo said at the handover of certificates to the officers.

“The company has a superb track record of solving complex work related programmes and it has committed itself to use some of the proceeds from the sales for corporal social responsibility activities,” he said.

Mr Makhumalo said the company was among the first Botswana Qualification Authority (BQA) accredited institutions specialising in human Resource management, employee wellness programmes and organisation development, amongst others.

“The company has three functional offices in Gaborone and Francistown and it has over 5600 employees from different industries that have successfully graduated from its training programmes,” said Mr Makhumalo.

He said all its products and services were quality assured through the requirements of quality management systems.

Now the company now wanted to reach to frontline workers especially in the security services because they were the first people to encounter incident and accidents and needed to know how to handle them.

“Poor handling leads to long stay in hospital and sometimes to death and disabilities, ‘ he added.

One of the graduates, Warden Kamogelo Sosong said the course had equipped her with the necessary skills that she required in her work.

“I am happy because with the course, I am now equipped with most of the skills in the first Aid area and I want to encourage other officers to undertake the course,” she explained.

Ms Sosong commended the IHSM for having organised the course. She urged other companies to do the same.

Superintendent Moipaledi Rakhudu of Gerald State Prison also commended the company for its gesture, adding knowledge of first aid was critical in a prison setting, and the training would help officers to know what they would need to do if confronted by an accident situation. ENDS
