09 Dec 2021

Kanye Cluster Independent Election Commission is conducting voter mobilisation as part of preparations for the bye-elections scheduled for December 18.

Chief Elections Officer, Ms Patricia Mmoloke told BOPA in an interview that voter mobilisation was meant to encourage voters and assist them to get ready for the election. She said bye-elections would be held in wards of Good Hope-Mabule, Mosupa East and Mmathethe-Molapowabojang Constituencies which were rendered vacant by death of councillors.

Ms Mmoloke expressed concern that Batswana still needed to be educated on the voting process and advised those who would be voting to ensure that their Identity cards were valid.

She encouraged those who had misplaced their voter cards to visit their respective Kgotla for duplicates, saying they have realised that many people had lost their voter cards.

“Our experience is that there is usually low turn up in participation as people tend to disregard the importance of bye-elections,” she said.

Ms Mmoloke, therefore, advised that it was crucial for bye-elections to be taken seriously as they also made a fundamental contribution to a democratic government just as much as the national elections.

She said nomination of candidates had been completed successfully, adding that candidates names had already been publicised.

“We are now in the process of conducting training,” She said.

The training which started yesterday is scheduled to end December 17.  ends
