Khwai man dies from buffalo attack

Police in Maun are investigating an incident in which a 42-year-old man of Khwai died following a buffalo attack.

Maun Police Station commander, Superintendent Chenamo Orateng said in an interview that the man, who was in the company of two others, was attacked by a buffalo while on their way to a fishing expedition on Sunday.

He said the man was attacked by the beast while his two companions managed to escape.

Superintendent Orateng said after sustaining injuries, the  man was taken to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital in Maun, where he was certified dead upon arrival.

Meanwhile, Northwest District Council chairperson, Mr Kebareeditse Ntsogotho said cases of wildlife attacks on humans were a concern in the district.

Speaking during the North West District Full Council meeting on Monday, Mr Ntsogotho said a total of 13 cases had been registered from January to date.

He said eight of them were fatal while five people survived.

Mr Ntsogotho cited lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and hyenas as problematic animals.

He said the Department of Wildlife and National Parks had been assisted with extra vehicles from headquarters to help attend to such cases urgently.

He also appealed to members of the public to be cautious at all times while in wildlife prone areas. ends
