The Adopt a School initiative by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development extended to Kwena Sereto Junior Secondary School in Molepolole where Desmas Consultancy donated eight computers recently.

Speaking at the prize giving day at the school, an official from Desmas Consultancy, Ms Precious Chasaya, said after adopting Kwena Sereto, her company pledged 15 computers to the school.

Ms Chasaya said, “We felt moved to contribute in our own small way towards ensuring that this initiative bears fruit. Therefore we decided to adopt Kwena Sereto Junior Secondary School. Today we honor the promise by handing over the first batch of eight computers. We believe that contributing resources towards education will help improve student’s grades and education,” she said.

She pointed out that by 2016 Botswana should have entered the information age on an equal footing with other nations, adding to realize this there was a need to equip schools with the necessary resources to ensure that students kept abreast with the current trends in information technology.

Ms Chasaya said from its experience in training and capacity building, Desmas Consultancy realized that there was still a huge gap that needed to be filled with regards to computer skills and literacy. She noted that they found that another way to work towards filling this gap is to ensure that children got the exposure at an early stage.

She stated that Desmas Consultancy wished to work with the schools towards the success of Adopt a School initiative. The company started by also capacitating teachers in the relevant office packages and ensuring that the school’s computer lab was set up and functioning. Meanwhile, Ms Chasaya said to the students that a door was being opened to enhance their computer skills.

“The resources have been provided,” she said. “What is left is for you to play your part. Grab this opportunity by the horns and make great use of it. The right skills in information technology enable you to be competitive globally.” With all of this, she noted that a good education once acquired goes a long way to develop a person and the nation at large.

Mr Fraser Tlhoiwe, the deputy coordinator of National Aids Coordinating Agency who is also a former principal of the school, said he was impressed by the gift from Desmas Consultancy. Mr Tlhoiwe however said he was disappointed and disgruntled by the behavior that the schools were displaying countrywide.

He said students were involved in risky behaviour of alcohol and sex parties, transactional and intergenerational sex, all of which exposed them to sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies. He explained that the risky behaviour destroyed the students’ future and crippled Botswana’s future. ENDS
