Club tackles water challenges at Xhana

06 Dec 2021

Kweneng Social Club has been commended for tackling water woes at Xhana settlement, some 35 kilometres from Maun by providing a 5 000 litres tank to supply potable water.

The club was formed four years ago by Bakwena residing in Maun and had been engaged in charity work in an effort to give back to the community and improve livelihoods.

Residents of Xhana settlement expressed gratitude during a handing over ceremony of the tank. The availability of the tank at the kgotla, they said, had mitigated the burden of travelling long distances to fetch unsafe water from the Thamalakane River for domestic purposes.

Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Polelo Manika they had long been promised a borehole in the but it was taking long.

“We can assure the club that we will strive hard to ensure the tank is always filled with water so that residents could access water closer,” he added.

Kgosi Sarah Molefi of Xhana thanked the club for demonstrating love and care towards the villagers, saying partnerships and collaboration were key towards human development.

She explained that their partnership with the club started last year when its members donated food hampers and clothes to the less privileged.

Kgosi Molefi noted that potable water supply has become a basis of improved community health and challenged villagers to ensure a judicious use of the donation. Kweneng Social Club manager, Mr Tefo Matlho explained that they had forged a partnership with the villagers last year with a view to adopt their settlement and assist in development where possible.

The club, he said, was committed to social investment which supported and contributed to the development of communities.

He said members of the club worked hard to generate maximum benefits for communities as their motive was to see the settlement recognised and gazetted so that villagers enjoyed basic services closer.

Mr Matlho revealed that they had some projects earmarked for the area. With regard to the water tank, he said they club saw it fit to assist the community following their plea last year.

“We came to their rescue by purchasing the tank while they waited for a permanent solution to their water woes,” he added. ENDS
