02 Dec 2021
Botswana Scout Association (BCA) is readying itself to tackle indiscipline and reform character in schools.
The exercise will be done under the re-set on character building and discipline in children programme, which has been formulated in support of President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s re-set agenda.
Chief Scout, Lt Ezekiel Malenya said in an interview yesterday, ahead of the launch of re-set on character building and discipline in children programme, that deterioration of morality among learners was a cause for concern hence the scout movement had raised its hand to intervene.
The re-set on character building and discipline in children programme launch will be held at Dikiwdidi Primary School on Monday.
Lt Malenya noted that indiscipline issues in education were just but a cry for reformation in character.
He said they had resorted to start engaging primary school pupils to catch them young. Lt Malenya said apart from being drilled on morality, learners would be taught life skills and to love, care and respect each other, which he said would be crucial in the fight against gender based violence troubling the country.
He said it would take years for their intervention to bear fruits in the community.
The chief scout said even at Matsha College, their intervention took years until the society took note of the improvement of the school performance.
Under the programme, the scout association would train and recruit a full primary school community starting from standard one up to standard seven as well as school head, teachers, non-teaching staff and security guards.
The school community would also have a day reserved for wearing scout uniform and hoisting the national flag. Lt Malenya said hoisting the national flag would instill patriotism among learners.
He added that the programme would be expanded to other schools in future.
The Dikiwdidi launch would be officiated by First Lady Ms Masisi assisted by Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Ms Anna Mokgethi on Monday. ENDS
