Christmas came early for about 200 elderly people in Maun who were hosted for lunch and received gifts from the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church women ministry on recently.
Officiating at the event, North West District Assistant Commissioner, Mr Ramogaupi Gaborekwe commended the SDA women for showing love towards the elderly people by showering them with gifts.
Mr Gaborekwe said that giving and having a good heart was a Biblical principle and was also part of Setswana culture.
He said that the Bible encouraged believers to show acts of love instead of preaching it only. Kgosi Kealetile Moremi of Batawana, said that the lunch and donations were a good gesture as it would help brighten elderly people’s lives.
Kgosi Kealetile observed that the elderly people normally experienced loneliness as they had retired from their jobs and lacked activities.
She urged young people to give elderly people love and attention at all times.
The SDA Women ministry president, Dr Kefa Matwetwe said that the church showed kindness by treating the elders to lunch as well as giving the gifts.
Dr Matwetwe said that “God loves the old and we should respect the elderly.”
He also said that the elderly had wisdom, understanding and experience and as such they should impart wisdom to young people.
SDA Women Ministries director, Ms Susan Williams said women ministry saw the need to show love to the elderly by bringing them gifts and lunch.
Ms Williams said the aim was to emulate Jesus as he cared for the destitute, orphans and elderly people.
She said that women ministry had so far donated to different villages across the country in Gumare, Mahalapye, Moshupa and Chanoga. Ends
